Is a four-day work week possible?

The Spanish Government is launching a pilot program to test the viability of the four-day work week. This is possible due to the agreement reached between the Government and Más País for the 2022 General State Budgets. They reserve 10 million euros for the study of the implementation of the 32-hour work week. The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism has confirmed that the conclusions of this project will serve to determine its development.

It is aimed at small and medium-sized companies in the sector industrial, that do not have more than 250 workers and with a business volume that does not exceed 50 million euros annually. Likewise, they must be up to date with tax payments and have been there for at least three years. Selected SMEs will receive aid of up to 150,000 euros.

To enjoy it, companies must reduce their working hours by at least 10%, without reducing the salary of their employees. workers. This situation will have to be maintained for two years.

Along with these measures, a series of organizational and training proposals must be presented, which lead to an improvement in productivity and compensate for salary costs.

Companies that want to join the program will have to submit an application to the Ministry of Industry. A commission will evaluate the applications and decide which companies will benefit from this subsidy.
